BANGOR, Maine – On Monday, January 13, U.S Border Patrol agents apprehended a Guatemalan male who admitted that he entered the United States illegally near Laredo, Texas approximately 12 years ago.
Upon questioning, agents learned that the Guatemalan national had no documents that would allow him to remain in the United States legally. Records checks later verified that there were no records of him in any immigration system. He was then placed under arrest and transported to Houlton for processing. The subject admitted to living and working various jobs throughout the state of Maine in the 12 years since his illegal crossing.
“The many years spent in the United States eluding our immigration process does not justify unauthorized individuals to remain in our country,” said Patrol Agent in Charge of Houlton Border Patrol Station, Brent Conley.
“The immigration process that authorizes immigrants the permission to visit or reside in the United States is set in place to protect not only our citizens, but also immigrants and visitors who have entered the country legally. It is our responsibility to enforce immigration law in order to keep our communities safe,” said Chief Patrol Agent, Jason Owens.
