SALTON CITY, Calif. – El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents from the Indio Station assigned to the Highway 86 checkpoint arrested a woman suspected of drug smuggling on Monday.
The incident occurred at approximately 4:30 p.m., when a 21-year-old woman approached the checkpoint driving a 2009 Toyota Corolla.
A Border Patrol detection canine alerted to the vehicle during a pre-primary inspection. Agents referred the woman to the secondary inspection area for a closer examination. After an intensive search, agents discovered 16 bundles of methamphetamine stuffed inside of the vehicle’s rocker panels.
“This seizure denies Transnational Criminal Organizations the money needed to continue their illicit activities,” said Acting Patrol Agent in Charge Marc Lieberman of the Indio Station. “This also highlights the great work accomplished daily by the agents of the Indio Station.”
The methamphetamine had a combined weight of 31 pounds with an estimated street value of $310,000.
The woman, a United States citizens, the vehicle, and narcotics were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for further investigation.
In fiscal year 2016, El Centro Sector has seized more than 500 pounds of methamphetamine and 148 pounds of cocaine.
