Border Patrol Agents Seize Marijuana, Arrest Four

Release Date

Yuma, Ariz. - U.S. Border Patrol agents from the Yuma Sector seized eight makeshift backpacks containing marijuana and arrested four suspected smugglers on Sunday. The marijuana weighed a total of 189 pounds with an estimated value of $94,500.

Wellton Station agents detected the four subjects near Gila Bend carrying large rectangular backpacks through the desert. Agents quickly located eight abandoned bundles of marijuana and discovered tracks leading away from the stash. Agents followed the footprints and apprehended the four suspects hiding behind stacked bales of hay.

All suspects admitted to being citizens of Mexico who entered illegally into the U.S. The suspects and marijuana were transported to Wellton Station for processing. The marijuana will be destroyed per Yuma Sector guidelines.

The Border Patrol has made significant progress in combating transnational criminal organizations by impacting their ability to transport contraband deeper into the United States, and ensuring that smugglers face stiff federal penalties for their actions. In Arizona, the probability of being detected and facing consequences is higher than ever before.
