SALTON CITY, Calif. – El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents from the Indio Station assigned to the Highway 86 Checkpoint stopped a pickup truck loaded with marijuana earlier today.
The incident occurred at approximately 10 a.m., when a 25-year-old woman approached the checkpoint in a Chevrolet Silverado.
A Border Patrol detection canine alerted to the vehicle at the primary inspection area. Agents referred the woman to secondary inspection area for a closer examination. Agents subsequently discovered 58 bundles of marijuana concealed in the rear wall of the truck and stuffed inside of the spare tire.
The bundles had a combined weight of 149.8 pounds and a street value of more than $89,000.
The woman, a United States citizen, the vehicle, and narcotics were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for further investigation.
In fiscal year 2014, El Centro Sector seized more than 5,713 pounds of marijuana.
