JACUMBA, Calif. — On September 11, Border Patrol agents in San Diego Sector aided a man who was lost in the high desert and in desperate circumstances.

At approximately 6:15 a.m., agents noticed a man walking along the U.S./Mexico International Boundary.  The agents approached the man and, during routine questioning, discovered that the 69-year-old male was a Mexican national.  Transporting him back to the station, agents questioned the man further and realized he had a severe cognitive disorder.

After extensive research, agents were able to locate the man’s family members in Tijuana and learned that the man was suffering from dementia.  He had left his home, wandered across the border, and got lost in the high desert in East County San Diego.

Agents also learned that family members had been searching for the man for nearly a week and had put posters along the border fence near Jacumba, Calif.  With much gratitude from the family, Border Patrol agents quickly arranged for the man’s safe return to Mexico.

San Diego Sector Chief Patrol Agent Douglas Harrison commented on the event, stating, “I am proud of the tenacity of our agents who always go the extra mile.  They did not cease their efforts until they located the lost man’s family in Tijuana and got him home.”
