Border Patrol Agents Commit to Children's Future

TUCSON, ARIZ.—Border Patrol agents do more than just patrol the border. Nogales Station agents also spend time helping local students develop a love of reading.

On Jan. 11, Nogales Station agents visited Mary Welty Elementary School to participate in the "Reading is Fundamental" campaign. Two third-grade classes with approximately 50 students sat and listened as agents read stories aloud. Afterward, agents and students discussed the books, and the importance of reading and education.

Although Border Patrol agents often live in the communities they serve, locals rarely see them outside of their law enforcement capacity. These educational programs allow agents more opportunities to interact with the community members they serve and protect daily.

Customs and Border Protection welcomes assistance from the community. Citizens can report suspicious activity to the Border Patrol and remain anonymous by calling (877) 872-7435 toll free.

All CBP assets in Arizona were realigned under a unified command structure in February 2011. Joint Field Command - Arizona unifies the Tucson and Yuma Border Patrol Sectors and Air Branches, as well as the Tucson Field Office, to enhance border security, commercial enforcement and trade facilitation missions to meet Arizona's unique challenges.
