EAGLE PASS, Texas – U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to Eagle Pass Station arrested a convicted sex offender, Feb. 4.
“The agents of Del Rio Sector remain vigilant against dangerous predators illegally entering our country,” said Del Rio Sector Chief Patrol Agent Austin L. Skero II. “We stand as the first line of defense and work hard to keep these violent criminals from reaching their destinations in our interior communities.”
Agents arrested Mario Fernando Hernandez-Mendez, 36, a citizen of Honduras, shortly after he illegally entered the United States. During processing, records checks revealed that in 2004, Hernandez-Mendez was convicted of sexual assault in San Antonio, and sentenced to three years of imprisonment. Hernandez-Mendez was most recently removed from the United States in 2019.
As a convicted felon, he faces a charge of 8 USC § 1326 – Re-entry After Deportation, which carries a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in prison.
