TUCSON, Ariz. – Tucson Sector Border Patrol agents assigned to the Ajo Station, assisted by an Air and Marine Operations helicopter aircrew, seized more than 135 pounds of marijuana and arrested one Nicaraguan national southwest of Ajo Thursday afternoon.

While agents on all-terrain vehicles were responding to sensor activity, an AMO aircrew spotted multiple suspects in the area carrying large backpacks of suspected marijuana. When agents encountered the group, the smugglers dropped their packs and ran. Agents arrested one of the suspects, a 32-year-old Nicaragua man, and seized more than 135 pounds of marijuana.

Agents transported the marijuana and suspect to the Ajo Station for processing, in accordance with Tucson Sector guidelines. He faces federal charges for drug smuggling and immigration violations.
