Rio Grande Valley checkpoint agents avert careless tactics

EDINBURG, Texas – The U.S. Border Patrol Rio Grande Valley Sector detected a high levelAgents thwart smugglers attempts at local checkpoints of illicit activity at the immigration checkpoints over the Memorial Day Weekend.

Starting Friday, May 25, through Monday, May 28, both the Falfurrias and Kingsville Border Patrol Checkpoints experienced a high number of vehicles through their checkpoints. The increased volume of traffic resulted in a total of 17 alien smuggling cases with 35 illegal aliens apprehended.

Additionally, agents stopped a total of four narcotic smuggling attempts resulting in the seizure of 90 pounds of marijuana and a small amount of cocaine.

“The danger involved with these smuggling tactics are magnified when combined with the extreme summer temperatures of South Texas,” said Chief Patrol Agent Manuel Padilla, Jr. “We will continue to work with our local, state and federal partners to ensure prosecution on all people who assist in the facilitation of these types of smuggling attempts.

All cases are being referred for prosecution. All subjects were offered medical attention and will be processed accordingly.
