At approximately 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Border Patrol agents in St. Albans, Vermont observed a sedan with three occupants driving south on U.S. Route 7 near Franklin Park West. The driver started driving in a very unsafe and erratic manner, at one point unnecessarily stopping in the middle of an intersection and later making an abrupt turn from the wrong lane. Passengers in the vehicle continuously turned to look out the back window in the direction of the agents. Due to the unsafe driving, as well as the suspicious actions of the occupants, agents stopped the vehicle.

During questioning, agents identified the three male occupants as citizens of Mexico with no status or documentation to allow them to legally enter or be present in the United States. Agents transported the individuals to the Swanton Station where further record checks revealed that one of the individuals has a prior removal from the U.S. and one subject has overstayed his visa.

“Individuals who break the law by entering the country illegally or remain in the country illegally will be arrested,” said Swanton Station Patrol Agent in Charge Matthew Sherman. “I applaud the hard work and vigilance of the Swanton Sector agents in carrying out their sworn duty of enforcing our nation’s laws and apprehending those who violate them.”

All of the apprehended individuals were turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Office of Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) for removal proceedings.

The Swanton Sector is responsible for securing the land border between ports of entry in Vermont, New Hampshire and northeastern New York. The coordination with assistance of citizens is invaluable to the Border Patrol's border security mission and we welcome community members' help to keep our nation’s borders safe. Please report suspicious activity at 1-800-689-3362.
