Supervisory International Relations Specialist
Overview
This series covers all classes of positions the duties of which are to advise on, administer, supervise, or perform professional work in the formulation and implementation of foreign policy of the United States in the conduct of the relations, primarily of a political or politico-economic nature, of the United States with other governments. The purpose of the work is to develop a partnership with a host nation in order to enhance its economic, diplomatic, and border security goals to the mutual benefit of both the United States and the host nation.
Duties at CBP
The primary duties of this position involve working with a substantial number of federal interagency partners in order to assess the economic potential, diplomatic capabilities, and border security issues of the host country. This position is also responsible for conducting analyses on international relations topics and providing Office of International Affairs (INA) with information on events, programs, and activities from a host country in an assigned area of responsibility (AOR).
Typical work assignments may include:

Working with the host country advisor to develop plans for international trade and travel, as well as for enhanced internal security for both the U.S. and the host nation; participating in forums concerning a variety of international diplomatic, political, military, economic, and related military issues involving the host nation and the United States; and preparing and presenting briefings on relevant issues for the host government and visiting U.S. dignitaries;

Working with the international and interagency communities to develop long-term economic, diplomatic, and border security policies; and various programs for the host country. Serving as liaison for counterparts within DHS, CBP, Department of State (DoS), and other federal agencies to assist the host country in developing theater security, contingency/crisis action strategic plans, and assessments, which may be used to develop trade and security agreements between the host country and the U.S.;

Assisting the host country by recommending, planning, and coordinating host country Senior Leader engagements with Washington, D.C.-based interagency leaders and members of various congressional delegations; and promoting outreach activities and programs within the host country in order to strengthen diplomatic ties with the U.S.;

Representing senior management at international meetings, planning conferences, and seminars; and briefing the Commissioner, CBP; the Assistant Commissioner, INA; high-ranking CBP senior officials; and various congressional delegations on the assigned host country's outreach strategies, activities and developments;

Influencing managers and various program officials to accept and implement recommendations, which will strengthen relations between the U.S. and a designated host country; and

Reviewing proposed legislation, which could modify important interagency and international relations; serving as the technical authority and expert in the interpretation of guidelines set forth by DHS, CBP, Department of Defense (DoD), DoS, and United States Agency for International Development (USAID); and making recommendations, which, when approved, will serve as governing guidance on the relationship of the U.S. to various host countries.
