DOUGLAS, Ariz. – A 30-year-old female Mexican national, traveling with her 35-month-old daughter, was arrested Monday for attempting to smuggle more than 310 pounds of marijuana through the Port of Douglas.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers referred Alma Angelina Martinez-Mendoza of Sonora, Mexico for a search of her 1995 Chevrolet Blazer an initial inspection revealed tampering with the vehicle’s fuel tank.
During the follow-on inspection, officers found and removed 260 packages of marijuana stashed throughout the vehicle. The marijuana, worth more than $155,000, and vehicle were seized. Martinez was referred to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations. Her daughter was turned over to the father.
