Ms. Katherine Coffman, Assistant Commissioner of the Office of Human Resources Management (HRM), manages a centralized human resources program providing service to nearly 60,000 nationwide and overseas CBP employees. In this role, Ms. Coffman supervises all matters involving human resources, including hiring, recruitment, organizational realignments, compensation and pay administration, benefits, workplace safety, and labor and employee relations. HRM consists of nearly 600 employees located in nearly 60 locations throughout the country. Prior to being named Assistant Commissioner, Ms. Coffman served as the Deputy Assistant Commissioner for HRM.
Ms. Coffman's federal career spans over 26 years having served almost 24 of those with the Department of Defense. Her entry into the HR field was as a Human Resources Specialist Intern with the U.S. Marine Corps in Okinawa, Japan. Since then, her career has encompassed all facets of human resources including operations, policy development, and strategic planning while working for the Department of the Navy and the Defense Intelligence Agency in diverse locations such as Naples, Italy, San Diego, CA, and Washington, D.C. She is the recipient of three Department of the Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Awards and the National Intelligence Distinguished Public Service Medal.
Ms. Coffman holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of Maryland, a Master's Degree in Global Leadership from the University of San Diego, and a Master's Degree in National Resource Strategy from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, National Defense University. She is a graduate of the Defense Leadership and Management Program, and a graduate of the Senior Managers in Government Program at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.
Ms. Coffman is a native Californian. As an avid runner, she has completed four marathons, and recently completed the Great Wall of China Marathon (10K) in 2011. Ms. Coffman is also a weekend golfer. She and her husband, Bob, a retired Marine, have two grown children; a daughter working with the Defense Department in Japan, and a son who is a Naval Aviator stationed in San Diego, CA.
