Nathaniel A. Afolayan

Border Patrol Agent Intern Nathaniel A. Afolayan collapsed during training after completing the 1.5 mile run portion of his physical techniques final exam. He was transported via ambulance to the Artesia General Hospital where his condition worsened. Later that day, he was transferred to the Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas, where he passed away on May 1, 2009. The cause of Agent Afolayan's death was determined to be heat illness.

Agent Afolayan had been sworn in as a Border Patrol Agent at the beginning of the 856th Border Patrol Academy session in February and had served with the Border Patrol for 10 weeks.

Agent Afolayan is survived by his wife, two daughters, parents, and three siblings.
